This piece has been at the top of my TBR pile since we connected Heidi, and I’m so glad I finally got around to it! You describe the complex experience of growing up as a second generation immigrant with poignance and insightful accuracy — the struggle of trying to navigate the differences between the Western world in which we live and the Eastern families in which we are born and grow up. What a beautiful way for you and your Dad to reconcile 💛

I so loved reading this! I’ve been going a Bible study of Ephesians and the verse in chapter 2 about us being fellow citizens one with another is such a lovely concept. God can bring together those from different backgrounds and expectations. Thank you so much for sharing this, Heidi!

This is a redemptive story, lovingly told. It’s so easy to miss the hard details of our parents’ lives that made them into who they were when we were young—and it’s easy to think that they will never change. Thank you for sharing, and praise God for the healing and beauty he brought to you and your father!

Hey Amos, thanks for stopping by and for reading our story! You make such good points in regards to lacking empathy for parents and thinking they are incapable of change. This was definitely true for me and a sign of my immaturity. Growth in empathy and hope was definitely the work of the Spirit, and not something I mustered up by my own strength!
